When Is the Best Time to Prune a Tree?

Pruning at the right time keeps your trees healthy, safe and beautiful. In most of North Alabama, the best time to prune is during the dormant season — late winter (late January through early March) — before new growth begins.

Why dormant-season pruning works best

When a tree is dormant, cuts heal faster and there is less risk of disease or pests entering fresh wounds. You can also see the tree's structure clearly without leaves.

Exceptions

Dead, damaged or dangerous branches should be removed any time of year. Flowering trees are often best pruned right after they bloom. When in doubt, a professional inspection is the safest choice.
